Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company

The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company ("the Dominion") was one of Canada's largest property and casualty insurers. It operated from 1887 until 2013. Products offered included auto, home and business insurance available through licensed brokers who operated as independent business people.
The Dominion’s head office was in Toronto and the company had various offices across Canada. The Dominion’s first president was Canada's first Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. The final Chief Executive Officer was George Cooke, who had been with the company since 1992. Cooke sat on numerous boards and supported a number of charities.
Cooke’s involvement in philanthropy mirrored the Dominion’s longstanding tradition of giving back to the community in which they worked and did business. As a supporter of grassroots curling, in 2009, the company created the first championship for club curlers in Canada, known as The Dominion Curling Club Championship.
In July 2010, the Dominion launched a website dedicated to helping Ontario drivers understand their car insurance.
In 2013, the Dominion was acquired by US insurer The Travelers Companies. Upon completion of the acquisition on November 1, it became part of Travelers' subsidiary Travelers Canada.
